Rebecca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) prepare for a week-long stay with their grandparents, John (Peter McRobbie) and Doris (Deanna Dunagan), while their mother, Paula (Kathryn Hahn), goes on a cruise with her new boyfriend. The two kids, who have never met their grandparents, intend to film a documentary about their visit. Paula has not seen her parents in 15 years, after she eloped with her high-school teacher, Robert, who has since left her. The Visit (2015) Movie Review

The Visit has a decent foundation. Kids stay with grandparents that are complete strangers to them. Nana and Pop Pop are seemingly well meaning old people. Their initial impression is warm and pleasant. Then things change when the sun goes down. Their behavior becomes erratic, in essence bizarre. Nana roams the house at night in various states of undress. She vomits on the floor and scratches at the walls. Pop-pop keeps his soiled adult diapers in the woodshed, attacks a stranger on the street and delusionally dresses in formal wear for a nonexistent costume party. Are they suffering from aging mental disorders or is there something even more sinister afoot? The chronicle marks the kids' vacation time with five title cards, one for each day of their trip. The first person shaky cam perspective only obscures an empty narrative. The gimmick takes what could've been a passable time filler into something interminable. Right around the halfway point you'll realize there's no plot. That is, of course, until that inevitable "twist" that in no way justifies the long-drawn-out set-up. Apparently M. Night Shyamalan knows no other way to creatively end a story. The movie is a mere 94 minutes. Everest (2015) Movie Review

Everest is a rather simple tale about a quest that ended in tragedy. It's an old fashioned rip roaring adventure ideally suited to the big screen. Early theater engagements were shown exclusively in IMAX 3D. The attributes of those formats serve this subject well. The visual splendor is beautifully conveyed. Sweeping vistas and aerial photography convey a sense of grandeur. One dizzy overhead shot above a high suspension bridge triggers feelings of acrophobia. This is a saga where nature is the enemy. A grueling storm, frostbite, blindless and the wind all threaten the safety of our courageous explorers. I am neither an experienced mountaineer nor was I present on the actual expedition. Therefore I am not here to vouch for the authenticity of facts of the sport or what really happened. From the trailer, released through Warner Bros, the film looks like a tense, riveting, action packed, criminal drama, and its own entity amongst the many similar dramas that have preceded it. Depp even put on extensive special effects makeup to divert audience attention to his performance rather than let his star appeal taint the film. The film follows the rise of Whitey Bulger through the ranks of the Boston crime scene with the aid of FBI liaison John Connolly (Edgerton). Through this unholy union Connolly makes Bulger an informant and protects him from prosecution. The Walk (2015) Movie Story

The story starts with Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) narrating the film atop the Statue of Liberty's torch. In 1973, Philippe is a street performer in France trying to make a living through juggling and wire walking, much to the chagrin of his father. During one performance, he eats a hard candy which was given to him by an audience member and hurts his tooth. He visits the dentist, and, while in the waiting room, he sees a picture of the Twin Towers in a magazine. He analyzes the photo and decides to make it his mission to walk a tightrope between the two buildings. Meanwhile, he is kicked out of his parents' house by his father, citing his lack of income. Philippe returns to the circus that inspired him to wire walk as a child and practices in the big top after hours, but is caught by Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), whom he impresses with his juggling skills. While performing, Philippe meets a beautiful woman, and fellow street performer, named Annie (Charlotte Le Bon) and begins a romantic relationship with her. He also explains that, although he didn't know it at the time, she was his first "accomplice". He tells Annie about his dream to walk between the buildings of the World Trade Center and she supports him and gives him a perfect place to practice at her music school. Philippe later meets a photographer named Jean-Louis (Clément Sibomy) and befriends him, becoming Philippe's official photographer and second accomplice in his coup to walk the Twin Towers. The film begins with a young boy, Thomas, taken in by Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and her organization WCKD, after being dropped off by his guardian for his own safety. Years later, shortly after being rescued from the maze, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and the remaining Gladers - Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Teresa Agnes (Kaya Scodelario), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Winston (Alexander Flores) - are taken to a facility run by Mr. Janson (Aidan Gillen). He explains that the facility is a safe haven, protecting them from WCKD, the Flare virus and the Cranks, and provides them clothes, food, and sanitation, where there are other survivors of multiple mazes are also present. Thomas becomes curious about their activities and manages to find out what is really happening behind the closed doors. With help from Aris Jones (Jacob Lofland), the first maze survivor to end up in the facility, it is revealed that WCKD's leader, Ava, is still alive and that Mr. Janson is working for WCKD, as they discuss about the experiment on the Immunes and that Janson has yet to find The Right Arm, a resistance group located at the mountains. The group, including Aris, escapes the facility, as Janson orders his WCKD troops to track them down, where they find themselves in the deserted outside world - the Scorch. (Source: Wikipedia)

The Intern (2015) Movie Review

This movie has a great premise that from the get go sets the film up for some obviously funny situations. While this wasn’t as funny as it could have been, it was charming and fun and the cast all seemed like they had great chemistry. But something about this movie just didn’t feel authentic to me. It was far too idyllic, from the picturesque Brooklyn setting, to the dreamy job running a start up company, complete with an in house masseuse. It all just seemed too good to be true and felt more like wish fulfillment than reality. Even the problems the characters faced were cliched and the way they were depicted in this film made them seem not that bad with resolutions that came far too easily. After such a long movie the ending was rather abrupt which wasn’t very satisfying. I did enjoy the film but it could have either been more comedic or more dramatic and been better than the standard light fare we were given. by Matthew Vallée (Source: letterboxd)

When a film works, the critical tendency is to praise the director and move outwards from there, but the palm-sweat intensity of Sicario feels more like a triumph of brilliant actors and collaborators over a gaseous auteur. Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve, and he brings the same heavy-handed pomposity to this story of an upright FBI agent (Emily Blunt) thrown neck first into the moral swamp of the Mexican drug war that he brought to Prisoners and Enemy. And yet even as I was frequently annoyed by the film, I still found Sicario tense and nightmarishly immersive from its opening frames. Villeneuve deserves credit for crafting some gripping sequences (a standoff at a bottlenecked border crossing is another highlight), but the film would be unimaginable without the vivid and tactile cinematography of Roger Deakins, the bruising Johann Johannsson score and the gripping performances of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro. A short time after the first film, Mavis (Selena Gomez) and her boyfriend Johnny (Andy Samberg) are married, with the approval of her father Dracula (Adam Sandler). A year later, they have a son name Dennis (Asher Blinkoff), who befriends Wayne's werewolf pup daughter Winnie (Sadie Sandler). Nearing his fifth birthday, Dennis has yet to grow his fangs, which worries Drac that his grandson might not gain vampire powers. The funny monsters return, it's about has funny has the first one, everybody does there voices well. I can't help but feel that this could be a good prime time comedy, a funny monster animated series could work, anybody remember The Munsters(1966-1968). A good animated film for kids and adults.
